Corporate/Group Rentals

Create a curling program or outing of your choosing (dependent on ice time and volunteer instructor availability).

What:

  • Program format is up to you and your group.
  • Rent the ice for one hour to learn the fundamentals.
  • Rent for two hours to add some game experience.
  • You can even start your own weekly league or curling camp.
Who:
Corporations, Organizations, Churches, Charities, Schools, Occupational Leagues, Clubs, or whoever wants to curl
When: (In General)
  • From April till September: evening and weekend ice time is generally available.
  • From October till March: only daytime and weekend evening ice time is typically available; other times (weekday evenings) may also be periodically available from week to week.
Where:
  • Pepsi Ice Midwest, Rink A. 12140 West 135th Street (at Quivira). Overland Park, KS 66221 (Map)
  • Special requests for alternative rinks will be considered.
Limits:
  • We can demonstrate the fundamentals for up to 40-50 individuals.
  • 32 people can play traditional curling matches at one time (4 per team; 2 teams per sheet; 4 sheets of ice; 4x2x4=32).
  • Optimally, we aim to have 1 volunteer Club Member for every 5-10 new curlers when demonstrating the fundamentals.
Cost:
  • $299 per hour is generally the ice rate our club pays to Pepsi Ice MidWest.
  • KC Curling Club Members are happy to volunteer their time to demonstrate the techniques of curling, but contributions to the Club on their behalf are greatly appreciated if you are able. Suggestion ($20-$40 per instructor)

"Excerpts for Dragon Fly Link to the Right"...
Experiments you can try.
  • * Find a smooth flat floor space in school, such as in the gym or cafeteria. Make "curling rocks" out of plastic food containers (like Tupperware). Attach a handle to the lid, like a curling rock has, so you can slide the container along the floor and give it a spin at the same time. Now, a curling rock that spins clockwise veers (or, curls) to the right; one that spins counterclockwise veers left. Do these containers curl just like curling rocks on ice?
  • * Try an experiment with another object that spins... a flying disc. Most of us throw with our right hand, which gives the disc a clockwise spin. Try to find a way to throw it so it spins counterclockwise. What differences do you see in the disc's flight? Does it tend to veer one way or the other, depending on the spin? Is there no difference at all?

I consider myself a good chess player and if all curling took was mental skills to be an Olympic curler, I too would consider it "just a game". These Olympic athletes have a 80-90% shot making skill, can consistently hit a stone 2" right of center 126' away to get the perfect roll or calm themselves, checking their heart rate and then freezing their stone on the face of the opponent's stone with perfect draw weight even after sweeping 26 seconds till their lung explode on the previous shot. As I said before, you simply need to try it to realize it can be quite challenging and have a greater respect for the players who are conditioned to play 11 - 2.5 hour matches over the coarse of a week.
